The Little Prince first published in 1943 was written by French aristocrat Antoine de Saint-Exupry Exupery was a writer poet and pilot best remember for his novellas Although his book The Little Prince appears to be for children it conveys many adult messages The title character of the book the little prince is a pure and innocent traveler whom encounters the narrator in the Sahara desert Before the little prince lands on earth Exupery contrasts his childlike character with those of adult characters he meets on other planets during his journey away from his home planet With each visit to a neighboring planet the prince meets different types of adult characters each time revealing their frivolities and weaknesses He finds them strange for what they do however once he arrives on earth he becomes not only a teacher but a student He meets a fox that teaches him what love entails and in turn he passes it on to the narratorThe narrator is an adult who explains early on in his life that his imaginative dreams as an artist were crushed after his drawing of a boa constrictor swallowing an elephant was not recognizable to the adults in his life Eventually he abandoned art in his life for a grown-up profession as a pilot He explains that he was rejuvenated six years early during an airplane crash in the Sahara Desert where he met the little prince He serves as the princes confidant and relays the princes story to us but the narrator undergoes transformations of his own After listening to the princes story about the knowledge the little prince has learned from the fox the narrator himself learns the foxs lesson about what makes things important He learns this by going to search for a water well and realizing that somethings are learned only through personal exploration Although both the narrator and the little prince are protagonists in this story they differ in
