Interest in Management Intensive Grazing MIG dairy farming has increased during the past two decades in the United States This is because dairy farms face financial social demand and environmental regulatory challenges that are threatening the sustainability of farm businesses With the realization of how essential foods quality is consumers nowadays care more about where their foods are from and how they are produced Also environmental regulations set numerous constraints for dairy farmers making the cost unaffordable for small-scale conventional farming even for the farms that have been family owned for tens of years All these factors push us to reconsider the benefits of MIG in all aspects and the possibility of bringing this old-fashioned farming method back to the market Also a question of concern to most people which farms are candidates for success following a switch from conventional to MIG This paper will discuss all the influences and the concerns of people regarding dairy farms and details in following sections of this technical reviewBackground of MIGWhen people picture dairy production they may have this image in mind In the late morning some dairy cattle moo on a beautiful hillside while other cows are resting eating and chasing each other around Such a picture might be realistic in the old days but in the mid 1980s pasturing seemed to be out of fashion Nott 2003 Conventional dairy farming became the dominated system at that time When they say conventional farmers mean industrialized production that is the method of keeping the cows from moving around thus to control energy loss from such movement and eventually letting all the forage energy go to the milk In this case cows are sitting or standing on concrete floor side by side with other dairy cattle under a sheltered barn Some farmers are reconsidering the possibility of pasture farming with a few of them switching back to an improved way of dairy pasturingManagement-Intensive-Grazing MIG over the last twenty
