In Europe during The Age of the Enlightenment people were starting toquestion traditions that had always been followed blindly Prior to TheAge of Enlightenment a large majority of Europeans followed the rule ofthe church the state absolute monarchies and much of societies beliefswere not that of individual discovery That began to change with The Ageof Enlightenment The Age of Enlightenment brought new ways of viewingthe individual society and women Many leading philosophers and writersproposed the use of rationale reason education believing freeintellectual thought would lead to individual happiness and bettersociety In no way will this essay suggest that the Enlightenmentoffered women the same rights equality or education as men but whatit did do for women was include them in the conversation of intellectualcapability This essay will give examples from Britain and France toshow that the core ideologies of the Enlightenment helped gain morerecognition of the female mind and their capacity to become intellectualbeings as well more social acceptance Also this essay will brieflyobserve the environments of the coffee houses in Britain and the salonsin France and how important they were to the education of women duringThe Age of Enlightenment It is my belief that because of this newenvironment that had been fostered during this time that it was a goodfor women moving forward towards equalityThe Age of Enlightenment did not offer women the same rights as menpolitically they continued to have no vote and they were still viewedas best suited for raising a family and maintaining the home as asubordinate to their husbands and men in general Many of the mostrespected minds of The Age of Enlightenment who pushed for moreliberalism individualism equal opportunity better education servicesand an overall distancing from traditional thinking still did notconsidered women on the same intellectual level as men In the book A History of Western Society the following is stated inregards to John Lockes opinion on the human mind The human mind atbirth is like a
