Its hard to believe that genocide is still happening in the world today From 1940 holacaust to today Sudans entire civiallan population faces threats from continuing and potentalliy new violence The genocidal war in Sudans western Darfur regionthe Nuba Mountains and the south of sudan has raged since early 2003 Over 300000 people have been killed and more than 2 million have been forced by the Sudanese military to flee from their villages into camps for displaced people After the Holocaust we proclaimed Never again Yet again and again we have failed to fulfill this promise Now in Darfur as genocide is taking place we must say Not this time As the peace process for the war in Sudans South inches along the situation in Sudans western province of Darfur deteriorated quicklyWe have watched genocide unfold before our eyes before Only after the killing ends do we acknowledge our inaction Each day in Darfur the death toll rises more women and children are raped and human suffering continues In July 2004 the US Holocaust Memorial Museum declared a Genocide Emergency in DarfurA United Nation inquiry found that government forces and militias conducted indiscriminate attacks including killing of civilians torture enforced disappearances destruction of villages rape and other forms of sexual violence pillaging and forced displacement throughout Darfur Yet not enough has been done to stop the violence and the situation continues to worsenRogoff LisaThe Nuba Mountains is an area about 30000 square milessituates in the southern part of the state of Kordofan and home to christensmuslims and tradional beleivers The people living in Nuba were decimated when the sudanse government conducted systematic assaults against them a policy that reached a peak in 1992 to 1993 but it still has continuedIn 1995 Justice Africa published a book Facing Genocide The Nuba of Sudan that was the first systematic documentation of the assault The authors argued that genocide properly described what was happening because the army avoids
