Sometime around 1968 a hippie calling herself Gee Sus moved into an old abandoned farmhouse in the north east countryside of Essex with friend Penny Rimbaud They had both felt disillusioned by what they saw going on in society around them and had decided to finally try and make a real change They chose to take the sixties idea of do it yourself to a new level Quitting the art school they had been attending together they renovated the old farmhouse into a huge self sufficient anarchist commune They converted the farmhouse rooms into different studios darkrooms and music rooms The gardens were enlarged and planted so that all the food they would ever need would be at their hands free for those who were hungry We wanted to have a house that was very open a safe house for people that was somewhere people could rest and think and share ideas Gee comments on the beginnings of what was to become known as Dial House an anarchist commune that would go down in history Outside of this there is very little known about Dial House or its inhabitants until around 1977 At this time after many different projects both musical and theatrical there formed in the peaceful farmhouse a band called Crass I think we all felt that it wasnt enough to stand up and write a poem or write a book I mean it had to be up there on stage Although a musical endeavor itself Crass was more then music it was a showcase of and information booth on what was going wrong in todays society and ways to change it As Penny Rimbaud began writing lyrics and music along with other squatters at the Dial House Gee took over the visual elements She began splicing together old documentaries and news footage along with her own recordings to make video collages for their onstage performances She also created the propaganda art
