A Raisin In the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is about an African American family The Youngers in which she talks about issues such as poverty gender and racial discrimination Hansberrys piece of writing focuses on the dreams of the main characters which motivates them The title A Raisin inthe Sun has been taken from the poem Harlem written by Langston Hughes in which he talks about the consequences of dreams This is appropriate for A Raisin in the Sun because it shows how deferred dreams of the Younger family shrivel up like a raisin in the sun leading to disillusionment and leaving very little hope Adding deeper meaning to this play it shows the contrast between two pivotal settings a small enclosed dingy apartment located in the ghetto near the southside of Chicago and a spacious hopeful white house in Clybourne Park The apartment is very small consisting of just three bedrooms all the furniture is super worn one bathroom that they share with other families and there is only a very small window which only a small amount of sunlight can reach the apartment Hansberry did an excellent job of creating a gloomy tired hopeless atmosphere which reflects the thoughts and actions of the family causing them to be unhappy with their lives You would think that the size of the apartment would bring the family close together that they would always have a special bond but ironically it pulls them apart Everywhere they look everyone they know has an updated life a comfortable life but they feel walked on they feel tired and worn like everything in that apartment As dreams began to fade and money takes over everyones life in the family all they are left with is a small enclosed dingy apartment The house in Clybourne Park represents the dignity of the family and the freedom of them living on someone elses property and paying rent the freedom from
