The Mask of Carton In the book A Tale of Two Cites by Charles Dickens there is a man that lives two In one life he is an alcoholic with no manners and in the other life he a completely different person he is charming and caring This man Sydney Carton is a man of unknown potential to most of his peers Sydney Carton appears as a man that is an alcoholic He is a total pig that has no manners no motivation and doesnt seem to appear to care about his appearance He acts as an exact foil of Charles Darnay and acts as man that has hopeless life represented by ideas like the following Mr Carton who had so long sat looking at the ceiling of the court changed neither his place nor his attitude even in this excitement while his learned friend Mr Stryver massing his papers before him 68 At this very moment he is just dazed and staring into the sky amazed by the formation of the tiles of just drunk and cant keep his attention to the case Though Mr Carton appears to be a hopeless wreck he really has great potential that is unmasked throughout the plot He does however love Lucie and his feelings for her eventually transform him into a man of profound potential He has the potential to be a greater lawyer than Mr Stryver and a greater husband than Charles Darnay In Book 2 he proposes to Lucie and shows how sincere and caring he is compared to Darnay he may not be better but he is equal to Darnay So he has this potential just like many teenagers to excel and be an outstanding member of society but chooses not to because it takes him laying off the beer and taking life serious He looks like Darnay for more than the reason to give doubt to a witness
