Alfie Kohn is an American author and lecturer who has explored a number of topics in education parenting and human behavior He touches a controversy topic which suggests that teachers should stop academic grading Some people believe that grading is meaningless and capricious Alfie Kohn offers an argument towards shifting our assessment system away from a rigorous grading metric and moving towards a system based more on teacher-student feedback collaboration and holistic assessment He gives three main effects of grading Grades reduce the students interest in the learning itself preference for challenging tasks and the quality of students thinking As a student I believe that not everything is about grades However to some students including myself grades are a motivation to keep doing better than the last time Again students have preferences for challenging tasks Some select easy teachers with the purpose of getting good grades When I am selecting my classes I do not pay attention to who the teacher is My thinking is however the teacher is hard or easy I am going to do my best For instance last semester I choose a class with a teacher I knew but did not know that she was going to be the teacher for that class I knew she was hard but that did not stop me from taking the class with her In fact I feel I learned a lot because she was always pushing me and the fact that she was hard and I was making good grades gave me more motivation to keep working hard On the other hand my brother was totally different Two years ago he was not motivated by grades at all In fact he did not want to go to school and his point was that why wasting time going to school if he was making bad grades anyways We were in the same high school so I tried to find something that could grab his
