Throughout history many play writes have tried to transform the theatre Many have tried but few have succeeded One that has transformed not only American theatre but also American writing is Arthur Miller Miller was born in New York in 1915 to Jewish immigrant parents By 1928 the family moved to Brooklyn after their garment manufacturing business began to fail His family was impacted dramatically during the depression which led to many of the inner themes of his later work Miller began writing after attending college He began by freelance writer and in 1944wrote his first play entitled The Man who had no Luck This was the story of a very successful man that was unhappy with his success In this he used several themes that he would later use in his most famous works This play opened to horrible reviews and closed after four performances This failure helped Miller open up and get prepared for his first successful play All My Sons This Play was his first hit and rightly so All My Sons is a play about a father manufacturer who faces a moral dilemma during World War II era He has to choose whether or not to lose his business or be successful by selling faulty airplane parts to the US military This play hit close to home to the audience at the time that was watching it considering everybody lost something during the great depression The play I believe is the best work Arthur Miller ever did The themes that derive from the story are themes that will occur throughout history Miller expresses this relationship in All My Sons and in Death of a Salesman Critic Steven R Centola says in a critical essay on Arthur Miller in the Cambridge composition to Literature that Miller shows us the actions of a father can effect not only himself but also his family Miller shows that the relationship of father
