The primary question of the Bibb Latene and John M Darleyarticle was will individuals react differently to situationsthat may seem like an emergency in the event they are aloneorin the presence of other people The reasoning for thisquestion is that Latene and Darley believe humans will reactbased on the way other people react However if a person isalone they will react more quickly to situations that comeacross as dangerous The interpretation behind this is from anexperiment done where people could hear another person havingwhat sounded like an epileptic fit in a room The results ofthis experiment found that the alone subjects were more likelyto try and help The subjects that were in groups did not reactas fast to help Is this because people rely on each other toinform themselves if a situation is dangerous or someone needshelp Do people conduct themselves differently based on the typeof responsibilities that are involvedTo try and answer these question Latene and Darley conducted anexperiment where male students were asked to come to aninterview about problems at the university The students thatarrived were asked to take a questionnaire before starting in awaiting room The room would start to fill with smoke through avent in the wall while the subjects filled out thequestionnaire The students were either alone in the room orpart of a three person group There were two three peoplegroups one groupwas of two people that knew the room was goingto fill with smoke and were told to remain unconcerned about thesmoke while none of the people in the other three person groupwere informed of the smokeThe results of this experiment show that median subjects in theroom alone responded to the smoke and left the room within 2minutes to report the smoke The group of the three that hadtwo people that were unconcerned by the smoke had results ofonly 1 out of 10 people report the smoke The last group ofallunformed subjects only 38 percent out of eight groups
