Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne although sometimes perceived otherwise is known to be one of the greatest heroines to grace the pages of classic literature In portraying her as somewhat of an anti-hero Hawthorne succeeds in telling us a complex and intriguing tale of a repressive time and one womans undying will to strike out against these repressive forces During the time which The Scarlet Letter takes place the 17th century there are the Puritans who occupy the greater Boston area The Puritans could be basically explained as being a group of religious fanatics who fed up with the problems with the Anglican church choose to escape to North America They were known infamously in this area for the Salem witch trials and many other similar incidents Due to their repressive nature they persecute Hester for her alleged adulterous behavior Hester is not terribly bothered by this as she is a very hardy and strong minded woman but is heartbroken as she sees her daughter Pearl being deprived of normal things due to her illegitimate birth In my opinion I view Hester as a heroine because of her undying will and also her casual manner of dealing with problems For instance instead of wearing simply a plain A on her bosom she instead crafts a very ornate A which of course is scarlet to wear Hester does not always seem to care about what others think about her as she is very strong-willed and above all independent Although the times are quite different we can still relate to Hesters attitude and manner very easily We can also relate to that periods represssivness as in the 20th century
