Clouded Thoughts In the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens the characters are filled with the characteristics of love rich against poor and duty to family Throughout the whole book characters demonstrate these themes The characters Pip Estella Joe Mrs Joe and Biddy demonstrated love a huge theme throughout the book Rich against poor was a large factor in the book Duties to family affected many peoples judgment and caused them to not only think about themselves but about the people they love Throughout the duration of the novel peoples judgment was clouded and their emotions took over to cause them to do things that they would not normally do Love was one of the main characteristics that caused peoples judgment to become obscured This was Pips first chance to really show his self-control and clear thinking I kissed her cheek as she turned it to me I think I would have gone through a great deal to kiss her cheek But I felt that the kiss was given to the coarse common boy as a piece of money might have been and that it was worth nothing page 764 Pip did a horrible job of showing self-control and he showed that he is easily corruptible As a young boy Pip was easy for Miss Havisham or Estella to mold into whatever they liked Far into the night Miss Havishams words Love her love her love her sounded in my ears I adapted them for my own reputation and said to my pillow I love her I love her I love her hundreds of times page 818 Pips love for Estella caused Pip to leave his guard down and could easily be persuaded to think how Miss Havisham or Estella want him to This was Pips renewed chance to show Estella how he had changed into a stronger minded character You ridiculous boy said Estella will you never take warning Or do you kiss
