Diving for Pearls by Katherine Thomson investigates the effect of diverse social and economic change on the lives of ordinary people As expected of good theatre Diving for Pearls entertains stirs emotion and provokes thought particularly through the use of relationships between characters humour physical and emotional pain and the use of symbols and sound In many ways the success of Diving for Pearls is particularly due to its ability to unite public issues to individual human circumstances and the later repercussions which then occur This assists in making it an entertaining play as the audience can not only understand the action taking place but also emphasises with the characters The use of simple yet very different people creates an interesting plot line and degree of conversation A good example is the character of Den who despite later proving to be a person of morals and integrity lives a relatively simple and uneventful life He bases his world around his comic books and Devon sandwiches oblivious to the change and soon to be inevitable circumstances that surround him Ron Texan Ted Den Never fails to win And he always gets the girl on the last page Humour and the use of sound also add to making the play entertaining Humour is used to break up the serious issues within the play and present messages to the audience that the characters are often oblivious to When Barbara attempts to practise an exercise she learnt at the hospitality course it is becoming increasingly obvious that despite her attempts to raise her social status and gain a job at the new Hotel she will never be successful Den Youre supposed to explain it calmly That seems to be the exercise Not whether I draw the boat right or not The use of sound to reinforce the issues of the play and to present ideas allows for diversity within the play itself and makes
