Was Dwight Eisenhower a great President Dwight Eisenhower a military genius and a great president rose to power by will and determination He did not know a life of easy work or easy answers Ike as his friends knew him had a military background that he went by when he was president He had a lot of experience working with international affairs before he became president so he knew how to handle himself with other countries Ike worked his way up through ranks of the army In high school he was only an average student but in the army he was one of the best He was also one of the best presidents As a political leader Eisenhower rejected many extremes He always sought the middle ground on every political problem He believed that the extremes to the right and to the left in any political dispute are always wrong Because of this mentality our country was saved from war and death In 1953 Eisenhower became the 34th President of the United States A major problem that Ike met was the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union Yet another was the Korean War Eisenhower needed to resolve problems in the Middle East which was between France England Egypt and the Soviet Union In our own country Eisenhower worried about segregation laws and trouble in the South Ike took all of these head on and even provided solutions to all of them Eisenhower launched the Interstate Highway System Ended the Korean War built up Americas nuclear arsenal and kept peace while pursuing a policy of containing Communism throughout the world The Republican Party leaders who supported NATO came to Eisenhower to ask him to fun for president The party had lost five elections in a row and was now dominated by conservative Senator Robert Taft an isolationist who had voted against NATO They
