The poem Easter Wings by George Hebert is a poem full of dark imagery that describes a mans struggle and dream to fly with Christ George Hebert was an English poet who was born into a wealthy background which allowed him to receive a good education growing up He takes the image of wings and creatively turns the meaning into angels or birds He also takes the word Easter which celebrates Jesuss resurrection His brilliant imagination and choice of words strikes the reader to find new truth and meaning throughout the poem In Easter Wings George Hebert illustrates his desire to be with Christ by using his creative imagination and vivid style to symbolize resurrection sin and freedomIn the first stanza Herbert uses Gods first human creation Adam to symbolize sin Lord who createdst man in wealth and store 1 What Herbert is explaining is that God created man and God gave man everything needed to survive When Adam betrayed God and ate the forbidden fruit he took Gods gifts for granted and in the end lost everything God had given him Adam was once wealthy with everything he could have asked for and betrayal has left him in a state of poverty The speaker feels since Adam was created in perfection and he is suffering the consequences of Adams downfall and was born into sin Phillis Herbert is feeling punished by God because of Adams untrustworthy behavior towards HimThe second stanza moves from discussing mans downfall and focuses on mans rebirth through God With Thee O let me rise As larks harmoniously 6-8 The speaker is devoting himself to God and is dreaming of being with Christ He begs the grace of God through Jesuss resurrection so that he might be brought back into a relationship with God Phillis He feels that his suffering will allow him to progress
