Elizabeth Bishop was an American poet who wrote during the Modernism movement The Modernism movement was a period where poets voiced their experiences and their individual thoughts However Bishops writing is vaguely based on her own experiences One of Bishops most recognized poem The Fish is theorized that it is based upon when she fished in Nova Scotia or Key West Elizabeth Bishop The Fish is about a speaker who captures a fish but then finds herself analyzing and empathizing with the fish and finally she sets the fish free Bishop uses literacy devices to reveal the relationship with humanity and nature and to portray the fish as humanThroughout The Fish the author uses personification to depict human nature In lines 5-6 Bishop writes he didnthe hadnt fought at all though this sentence is not personification these lines are a metaphor for personification Bishop tries to convey to her audience that the fish surrender and surrendering is a human characteristic The author also explains that the fish had five hooks lodged in its mouth She illustrates that this fish was a fighter but it slowly grew tired and finally surrendered to the fisher woman Additionally she shows the relationship between humanity and nature by allowing the speaker to be observant and curious of the fishs behavior Bishop describes the fish as battered venerable and homely she does this to illustrate that this fish has been through war Furthermore just like a soldier or veteran it has been bruised scared and is wearing away The author also writes in this context to demonstrate that the speaker is beginning to sympathize with the fish and by doing so she is reveals that humans can identify with nature In line 64 a five-haired beard of wisdomtrailing from aching jaw is personification for an old wise veteran Additionally these lines also depict that the speaker respects the fish and acknowledges that the fish is
