In the 1900s women did not receive the same opportunities and respect as men For much of the century society expected women to become wives and work at home while their husbands went out and made money to provide for their families In The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath Esther must deal with the limited roles available to women in the 1950s society Esther struggles to find peace with her parents obsesses over losing her virginity and fails to fit in with other intelligent women which results in her developing a mental illnessIn The Bell Jar Esther deals with family problems such as losing her father at a young age and resenting her mother The death of Esthers father impacts her life negatively because the incident leaves her to grow up without a father figure and causes her to resent her mother Esther copes with losing her father at the age of nine which appears as an incident that leaves her psychologically damaged as she grows older After Esthers father passes away Esther cannot get along with her mother because she feels as though she does not understand her and she resents her for not acting as an independent woman Esther forms two reasons for hating her mother The one female character that Esther is ambivalent toward is her mother Mrs Greenwood I hate her sums up her feelings very well Two reasons explain Esthers loathing First her mother discouraged Esther from mourning over her dead father second Esther sees her mother as a woman who sacrificed her will for her husbands career The Bell Jar 27 Esthers fathers death not only impacts her psychologically it also impacts her relationship with her mother Esther cannot find herself to forgive her mother for not allowing her to mourn over losing her father whom her mother did not grieve over one bit Esther takes it upon herself to grieve over her dead father alone since her mother
