Freedom of Speech Give me the liberty to know to utter and to argue freely according to conscience above all liberties These words were written 350 years ago by famous 17th writer John Milton in his 1644 book Areopagitica in which he spoke out against censorship Miltons battle against censorship did not end in 1644 however Freedom of speech and expression is an issue that has been very controversial throughout history For centuries the freedom to say whatever you want has been banned and strictly enforced mainly to keep revolutionaries from speaking out against government corruption The people fought back however and won their right to voice their beliefs Today in the 21st century these fundamental rights are again in question The governments of the United States and Canada have sprung up much debate over issues involving censorship and freedom of speech These issues include music and the internet These areas of controversy continue to spring up in the n ew millennium The most major issue involving freedom of speech that exists today is over music Music is a form of art and expression that has existed since time began New forms of music exist today however that draw the line between art and hate The most controversial form of music in todays society is rap The debate over rap started in the early 90s with a group of Los Angeles rappers called NWA NWA spoke out against police brutality and racism but did so in a very violent manner in songs such as F The Police NWA was warned about there lyrics and when they continued to perform them on stage they were actually arrested and dragged off NWAs freedom of speech had been violated and they were not convicted of any offences Since then rap lyrics have been questioned and debated over greatly In
