I grew up in a traditional Filipino society where extended family is thenorm Like most families in the Philippines my family is not only made upof my mother and my father but also my maternal grandmother grandfatheruncles aunts and cousins living in different houses that are closelysituated to one another Growing up in an extended family I developed avery close relationship with each member of the clan Personally thisrelationship has helped me a lot because it provided me with the moralemotional and spiritual support that I need as I was growing upI believe one of the greatest values that we Filipinos have is the closerelationship that we form with each family member This closeness has madesocial stability in the Philippines very possible despite its third worldstatus As a result of this important kin bond we very rarely seeorphanages and nursing homes in the country which is prevalent in mostaffluent countries such as the United States In addition this closefamily association permits a child to stay with his or her parents for aslong as they want whereas in most western countries where earlyindependence is greatly emphasized children as early as eighteen years ofage are basically living on their ownOver the years the size of the nuclear family in the Philippines isbecoming smaller Tracing my familys lineage I have found out that mymaternal great grandfather has eight siblings my grandfather has six mymother also has six and I was an only child At present Filipino familieshave an average of two kids One of the reasons for this decline hassomething to do with the economic situation of the country As the cost ofliving rises couples are forced to resort to family planning and birthspacing in order to make sure that the needs of every child are met andthat the child will not become a burden to the societyThe Philippines observes a pattern of ambilocal residency The couple has achoice of either moving close to
