The use of paradigms has been used and accepted in the scientific world for centuries Kuhn uses the example of electricity in the eighteenth century and how the science has to develop in order to become a universally accepted paradigm 5 A paradigm shift comes about when new technology is invented or something universally accepted is proven to be no longer true and the search for a new paradigm begins In the scientific community paradigm shifts are used to show how different concepts and ideas change and evolve One representation showing this is the example of how science is a non-linear process This is also true in many works of literature as we have seen in The Latehomecomer Yang the author uses this format and follows a non-linear storyline as she tells of the trials and tribulations she and her family went through in their journey to find a new home and their new identity The approach Yang uses to tell the story of her family is a very unique one and one that catches the attention of readers right from the start When first getting into this book and reading of the relationship between her mother and father one might think to themselves who is telling me this Readers come to realize it is Yang telling the story of her parents from the stories they have told her She continues on with their story until the arrival of their second child Kao Kalia Yang and that is when the narration takes over from her own experiences Throughout the story there is an overall theme of identity and the Yang familys search for their lost identity For many people their identity is their culture homeland or basically anything giving them roots and a background This is not the case for Yangs family They are uprooted and betrayed by the country the love and they are forced to be refugees in another land another culture never
