Justifiable Sensationalism Lets say you are struggling through one of lifes many pitches Your having a hard time handling the situation so naturally you turn to your family At once your burden becomes lighter as the struggle continues with the help from your loved ones What about millions of readers and viewers Can a familys struggle through lifes difficulties really be enough to base a news story on Shows like 60 Minutes and magazines like Time claim they are reporting news but I think that interviewing someones personal life hardly qualifies as actual news News should be factual giving society information that really matters and pertains to what is currently going on in out world Today sensationalism and human interest stories are dominating out so called news sources but this is no news In Jim Squires essay The Impossibility of Fairness he writes With the exception of a few fine and committed newspapers and magazines the professional standards and values of journalism have gone to hell in a hand-basket cast out in favor of an entertainment culture with no moral compass and no concern for fairness- or taste 767 I for one completely agree with his claim about todays journalism tactics America is too concerned with entertainment news than factual news 2 In the January 2003 issue of Time magazine which is allegedly reporting news I found several stories which contained little or no newsworthy information One such story One Familys Burden introduced a man named Ed Beale and how he overcame schizophrenia I admit that this is a marvelous defeat but why put this story in a newsmagazine Ed overcame his disease but now the doctors wonder if it will be passed on to his three-year-old son Also an interesting question but this entire article contained no factual information about the disease or what you should do if you maybe develop it The whole point of this story was so people could
