John Irving the author of A Prayer for Owen Meany uses his backgroundand childhood to affect the plot of the novel Although there are manythings that make his life in the past different than the lives of thecharacters in the book there are some similarities as well which showwhere Irving may have gotten some of his ideas from The life of Johnnythe main character in the novel lives a life very similar to the lifeIrving lived in the past Irvings writing style is very descriptive He writes a way thatreaders will be able to perfectly picture what hes describing Hiswriting style is influenced by Charles Dickens because of a love forhis writing Wood A Prayer for Owen Meany was written from the perspective of themain character Johnny Wheelwright as an adult looking back on theadventures he had during his childhood Johnny and Owen did many thingswith each other such as playing with a stuffed armadillo and spendingmost of their time at Johnnys grandmothers house As they got oldertheir adventures continued They did much more together such as Owenusing a diamond wheel to cut off Johnnys finger to prevent beingdeployed to war attempts to get girlfriends and simply talking toeach other about almost everything Throughout the story Johnny flashesback on the many incidents that happened with him and his best friendOwenIt is implied that Owen has a dwarfish figure and that hes very smallOwen had a very high pitched voice which was unlike any others He wasalso in love with Johnnys mother who he eventually ended up killingafter she got hit with a flying baseball that hed hitOwen believed that he was Gods instrument causing him to be okay withhis differences He had an unbelievable amount of faith which hebrought to Johnny throughout their lives The whole story was describinghow Owen made Johnny believe in God Owen was born because of ImmaculateConception the same way Jesus had been known to have been
