Martin Luther King Jr is undisputedly the most influential AfricanAmerican Civil Rights leader in human history He is known by both theyoung and old for the speech that he gave from the steps of LincolnMemorial with an audience of approximately 250000 on April 28th 1963entitled I Have a Dream Less than two weeks earlier though Kingwas sitting in a Birmingham jail cell after being arrested forparticipating in a non-violent campaign in hopes to make progress in thecivil rights movement While in jail King writes a letter to eightclergymen in response to the questions that they have concerning hisactions We now know this letter as Letter from Birmingham Jail Inparagraph twelve King quotes theologian Reinhold Niebuhr who oncestated groups tend to be more immoral than individuals King 701I strongly agree with both theologian Niebuhr and Dr King During the mid 1900s there was major conflict concerning race inAmerica Many whites viewed themselves as the superior race whileviewing blacks as the scum of the earth King states it is ahistorical fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privilegesvoluntarily King 701 Whites at that time were the privilegedgroup and had access to things such as top-tier schools nicerbathrooms cleaner water fountains fancier restaurants and many otherfacilities Kings belief is that even though some whites may not haveagreed with racism they may have tolerated and turned a blind eyetowards it because the personal benefits outweighed the externalconsequences Some may argue though that these immoral acts from groupshappened over fifty years ago but we as Americans have changed and arenow a more moral people This idea simply is not true the same trend ishappening in our society today Immediately I think about the mediareports concerning Wall Street and how the 99 want the 1 need to paymore taxes To paraphrase Dr King those with privileges and perks donot want to forfeit these so-called rights no matter how morally wrongothers may see it Have you ever noticed how the majority
