The story Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield is a story about a lady of the same name Because Miss Brills beliefs in herself are shattered by a couple saying that she is old and unwanted she realizes that her belief that her life has meaning has been an illusion Miss Brill is an elderly lonely lady who treats a fur that she owns as if it were human and her only companion The fur is old but she thinks that it is elegant Mansfield states that Miss Brill takes the fur out of the box and shakes off the moth powder and she rubs life back into its dim little eyes Miss Brill ignores that she is an elderly woman When she starts to think of herself as old she brushes that thought away quickly She tries to see happiness in every thought or situation She has tingling in her hands and arms but says to herself it must have been from walking she supposed She also thinks that when she breathed it was something light and sad no not exactly something gentle moved within her bosom In this part she immediately says no not exactly and she changes her words not letting herself think these thoughts because then that would be evidence to herself that she was old She constantly changes her words so that she can deny herself as being old She frequents a park every Sunday and she feels that all the essence of her life lies within this park She knows exactly when there are a lot of people at the park Mansfield states This Sunday is the start of the season That is the season when all the plays are going on There is a band in the park that plays all year around but during the season they sounded louder and gayer thinks Miss Brill Mansfield states that Miss Brill
