We all know the power of sin Weve been taught what not to do but is that enough Sin is everywhere Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter is a deep novel that grasps the readers by detailing the effects of ones wrongdoings The pages are filled with shrewdness revenge guilt and social judgment The author used symbols settings and themes to get the points across but most importantly he used strong characters throughout In Hawthornes novel his characters portray how definite actions determines lifes journey that one will endure Hester Prynne while being punished was able to maturely handle the situation and grow from her sin Though ridiculed and excluded Prynne cared little of what others thought and wore the scarlet letter with pride Had she allowed the taunting from the townspeople to control her life Hester would have been a completely different person Letting the A become a part of her Hester was able to acknowledge her sin and move on from it In addition the adulterer became selfless which gave her the opportunity to forget about her sin She took on the responsibility of raising a daughter in midst of being the town mockery Prynne also donated the majority of her time to the less fortunate realizing others in the area had it worse than her Had Hester not courageously worn the scarlet letter and forgave herself for her sin she would have ended up tormented miserable and alone Completely opposite Reverend Arthur Dimmsdale never admitted to his sin too worried of his reputation He bottled it up inside eventually causing him to die In most cases the reverend is the first to confess sin but this was not the case Dimmsdale sinned hes human and yet never professing it turned him into a wretched man Along those same lines instead of confessing his sin he tortured himself He kept his secret too afraid of what others would think yet still ashamed
