Kuwait was a small country that had once been part of the Ottoman Empire and then a British Protectorate Most of the countrys revenues derived from the oil industry Saddam already controlled over 20 of the worlds oil reservesSaudi Arabia contained an additional 20 Since the world economy was primarily driven by fossil fuels what Saddam could do with these resources could easily be imagined The population was small about 19 million and its military was not a factor in regional politicsKuwait had loaned Iraq considerable sums during the IranIraq war Iraq claimed to have saved the entire region from the Iranian steam roller in the 1980s and deserved special consideration amounting to renegotiating or even cancelling the debt but Kuwait refused Further Iraq had been vigorous in developing weapons of mass destruction CIA and other intelligent experts estimated that the Iraqis were on the brink of developing a nuclear capability and likely had a biological weapons capability There was no question that they had chemical weapons Unfortunately they showed no remorse about using their chemical weapons They had even done so on villages within their own boundaries in order to put down the Kurdish independence movement During late July of 1990 Saddam built up his military forces on the border with Kuwait At 100 am on 02 August three Iraqi divisions of the elite Republican Guard rolled over the border The Guard reached the outskirts of the capital Kuwait City The frontal assault was supported by an airborne special forces division attack directly on Kuwait City itself Saddam Hussein sent his troops into Kuwait on August 2 1990 The United Nations felt compelled to condemn Iraq and asked them to draw back their troops They called for Saddam Hussein to withdraw his troops and called for countries throughout the world to cease all trade with Iraq President froze 20 billion of Iraqi money in American banks and prohibited imports of Iraqi oil
