Parkers Back is the last story written by Flannery OConnor and it expresses the human souls struggle against and toward the power of God The main character OE Parker purposefully walked against the path of enlightenment and was persistent in resisting finding his way through God Instead he went about finding himself in odd manners starting at the age of 14 when he saw a man covered in tattoos all of which had beautiful colors that made up flowers trees and creatures mirroring the array of the Garden of Eden Parker was mesmerized and from that point on in his life he strived for the same appearance with all of those pieces of art working together to pull off one complete masterpiece However tattoo after tattoo Parker found himself displeased by the way the designs on his body seemed to coincide with the others giving off an awkward effect rather than what he saw in the man at the fair He didnt feel content through his tattoos because of the essence of them the snake symbolized evil the panther and tiger stood for aggression the hearts and arrows symbolized lust the peacock stood pride and arrogance and the Buddha symbolized differing religions Instead of feeling complete Parker was left with a void and he fed that emptiness with his addiction A vicious cycle arose and after each tattoo put on his body a greater dissatisfaction grew within him While Parker was a colorful materialistic and unstable man he married a woman Sarah Ruth who was quite the opposite She was cold and plain with judgmental eyes and being the daughter of a preacher she knew the Bible like the back of her hand and went about telling others especially Parker exactly how theyre expected to live if they were to be right with the Lord Oddly enough Sarah was not Parkers type meaning that he didnt find her the least bit attractive but as
