Between the middle and upper classes there is a side of society that often goes unseen a side ridden with poverty and misfortune In The Singer Solution to World Poverty Peter Singer tells Americans that sacrificing their luxuries which are comparatively not as important they can prevent many people from dying He presents two hypothetical situations to support his argument In Doras case Dora saves the boy that she got paid a thousand dollars for when she discovered the deathly fate of the boy In Bobs case Bob did not save the childs life because he did not want to sacrifice his Bugatti a luxurious car he invested his life savings on Singer uses these two situations as analogies to the choices Americans could make Dora has met her moral obligations while Bob has not and Singer praises Doras action for stepping forth to save a child and denounces Bobs action for making his Bugatti seem more valuable than a childs life Singer looks at the consequences of an action to see if it is right or wrong and that if any childs death is caused by the action it is wrong He believes that if we can prevent something bad from happening without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance then we ought to do so Therefore he wants Americans to donate money to organizations overseas for the needy by not spending that money on personal luxuries Singer argues that according to Peter Unger it would only take two hundred dollars to help a sickly two-year-old transform into a healthy six-year-old p369 yet so many people are able but not willing to donate Towards the end of the essay Singer demands that we shouldnt donate only two hundred dollars stating I can see no escape from the conclusion that each one of us with wealth surplus to his or her essential needs should be giving most of it to help people suffering from poverty
