How is it that you make a decision between two cartoons about which is better Some say that you should judge them by which of the cartoons has the best plot others say to decide on how well the characters relate to humans I however did neither of these I decided by the amount small details the artists put in to the film I divided the details in to three different categories background foreground detail character detail and natural elements The movie The Lion King had excellent backgrounds and foregrounds At the beginning of the movie there is a brilliant sunrise this sunrise showed an extremely high-quality background It slowly transfers from a dark blue through a variety of mauves violets to a bright sky blue The artists also show amazing foreground details by showing every individual blade of grass on a fast running scene The artists also achieve multiple layered sequences by having intense details on the front of the picture at the beginning of a scene and then slowly moving the detail to the back at the end of the scene eg Simba and Nala are in the elephant graveyard as they leave the artists soften detail on them and then focus detail on the uncle at the top of the screen Before the artists did this the uncle was unnoticed at the top of the screenToy Story does not achieve as great of detail in this category however it does have a few good points Throughout the movie whenever there is a close-up of one of the characters faces the background is in great detail eg at the beginning of the movie Woody is sitting on a chair with Andy and you can see the intricate weaving patterns of the chairs material There is also great detail put into the wooden floor of Andys room all of the different pattern in the grains of wood can be seen The Lion
