The reign of King Louis-Philippe of France during the mid-eighteen hundreds was a period of chaos and class-shifting struggle The members of the French bourgeois were fighting for their freedom and the right to live under the governing of a republic Industrial revolution was also occurring in France shifting the majority of available jobs to urban centers The result of that shift was the formation of a large rift between the wealthy landowners and industrialists and the poor working class leaving a middle-class population uncertain of its position Many of the middle class set themselves upon achieving the wealth of the upper class and were often ruthlessly obsessed with getting ahead in life The middle of the nineteenth century also marked the end of the Romantic era of literature The influence thereof having impressed itself strongly upon the bourgeois furthered their desire for wealth and leisure The childhood of Gustave Flaubert coincided with the societal changes occurring during that time period He was very much influenced and disturbed by what he saw as the pretentious nonsense of his own class the bourgeois Flaubert sought to escape his destiny as a typical middle-class professional by fulfilling his dream of writing His lofty goal was to create a novel that would be a model of literary perfection Flaubert worked diligently for five years from 1851 to 1856 and the result of his toils is Madame Bovary which is recognized as his masterpiece His story of the struggle of Madame Bovary to escape the narrow boundaries of middle class society can be seen as a reflection of his own life experiences Flaubert sought to represent Emma Bovary as a result of the times a victim of circumstance and overly romantic ideals Beyond Madame Bovary herself Flaubert creates an array of characters equally suited to the provincial setting of the novel representing the thoughts and behavior of the bourgeoisie striving for luxury Flauberts work reflects the time of its
