Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry In the Book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor the setting takes place during the Great Depression The Great Depression began in October 29 1929 when the stock market had crashed and stocks were being sold at an excessively high price When the stock market crashed many businesses and companies closed down leaving many people without a job and without any money Many families were poor during this time and people were desperate for a decent job Many families also were struggling with taxes and they couldnt pay them off because they had no money As the result people were not able to own land because they had no money and had no place to live Many other families had problems putting food on the table The theme of this book is about racism One type of racism that is in this book is prejudice The white people in this book are prejudice to the black people One example of white people being prejudice to black people was when Cassie and Lillian Jean bumped into each other Lillian Jean said that Cassie bumped into her and she told her dad Her dad thought that Cassie who was black bumped into Lillian Jean who was white because she was black and he did not like blacks Lillian Jeans dad tried to make Cassie apologize but she did not listen He took Cassie down to the ground twisted her arm and told her to apologize to Lillian Jean Cassie did do as he told her but she did not mean it when she apologized Another example of white people being prejudice to black people is that in the book all of the women who are white are treated with respect and referred as miss or misses and the black women are not The black women are just referred by their first name For
