The stories Age of Iron and Cry Freedom share similarities and differences An acclaimed writer-JM Coetzee-writes Age of Iron in the form of a letter-diary to a dying womans daughter while Cry Freedom was a screenplay adapted from a journalists true accounts of the time The similarities between Age of Iron and Cry Freedom include the setting the theme and the various characters The differences consist of the ending the main focus and the purpose of the story The first similarity in the two stories lies in the setting It is an obvious comparison as both of the stories take place in the late apartheid of South Africa The next similarity is the theme There is more than one theme for each of the stories but the ones that predominate are love or comradeship and the apartheid and its faults The love comes in the form of motherly love on the part of Ms Curren and her feelings towards Bheki-her domestics son Johannes-Bhekis friend and even Mr V-the derelict who is thrust into her life early in the story Ms Curren at first feels nothing towards these impossible characters but as the story progresses her maternal instincts and love take over The idea of comradeship is apparent in the relationship between Bheki and Johannes and the other revolutionaries Comradeship also forms between the unlikely couple of Donald Woods and Steve Biko The bonds of the love and comradeship are held as the strongest and most important bonds there are among those involved The next of the similarities between the two stories lies in the characters themselves Primarily the two protagonists Donald Woods-a middle class white liberal journalist and Ms Curren-the terminally ill middle class white liberal retired classics professor are very similar Both of these characters are loving older white persons who play a large part in the stories Ms Curren is thrust into the turmoil of South Africa care of her
