Does social class or party affiliation affect the vote today as it did around the time of Andrew Jacksons presidency If any person was to ask a few people poor or rich theyll receive a lot of different opinions but one can observe that lower-class people tend to vote for Democrats who benefit not only the needy but the people as a whole and that Republicans only think about themselves instead of promoting the general Welfare as described in the preamble in the US Constitution So comes up the idea of the ability to control government In Alexis de Tocquevilles Government by Democracy in America and James Madisons The Federalist No 10 both explain how voting and government was operated and how the government should operate based on class and faction in the United States Even though it never had a voice in government in the past the lower class today has a strong influence on politics and thus leads to the question on who dominates politics who rulesThe reason behind this influence of voting by classification of social class was all because of the social norms of government and the requirements to vote in the early 19th century Tocqueville states that all the states of the Union had adopted universal suffrage At the time of Jacksons presidency in order to vote one must be a white male with property By 1820 voting rights were extended to only white males so the term universal does not exactly describe what Tocqueville is observing as he wrote it in Democracy in America In fact the main reasons universal suffrage exists today is with the ratifications of the 15th 19th and 26th amendments of the US Constitution which expands to citizens regardless of race to women and to 18 year olds respectively the result of these actions led to the spread of the majoritys opinion and the growth of the majority itself Even though it never had a
