Sonnys BluesE By James Baldwin Past and present memories are stories inside themselves The memory in which one consumes holds a special value in a persons life whether good or bad They reflect on the future and the nature of life In Sonnys BluesEby James Baldwin many questions seem to occur to the reader What makes past memories so important to the future Why does the memories of the character reflect on them in the future Do memories change the way a person looks at present day situations These questions linger in the mind of the reader as they indulge in Baldwins masterpiece Being that Baldwin grew up in the slick city streets of Harlem the story portrays a similar aspect Baldwin takes two devoted brothers who share memories and emotions Harlem and undefined understanding of each other and puts them through the test of times The memories begins when the narrator of the story which is the brother whose name is never mentioned remembers the event of his brother getting caught in a drug raid for using heroin This leads to stories that are told from the place that Sonny and the narrator grew up the death and departure of their mother and how they parted which explains a little of why the didnt communicate very well Sonny was special to their family in which he shared a bond with his family His brother always had expectations for him as he began to grow older The narrator only wanted to do what was in Sonnys best interest He wanted to see his little brother succeed in his education one day making him proud to see him walk across a stage to receive his diploma In addition he wanted to keep his promise to his mother Before her death the narrator spoke with her before he went back into the army She told him a solemn story about their uncle that they
