Cant Fight FateOftentimes literature is used as a form of escapism This idea can be seen within works as well In the story of Oedipus Rex we see examples of escapism shown through prophecies and the actions that characters take to avoid their destinyEven though these prophecies have a major impact on the play the gods also have a hand in steering events in different directions The examples of Oedipus and Laius cannot be ignored when thinking of todays society as people continue to try to escape from the problems surrounding their livesThe moral in this play has much more in common with todays society than we may believe however in the play Oedipus the King Sophocles uses the characters of Laius and Oedipus to express his view on fate and free will by demonstrating that fate is inescapableIn time of play the time of this play the ancient Greeks focused their religious beliefs around Polytheism Polytheism is the belief in more than one god This also includes worshiping these gods at a temple or altar The most popular religion in todays society Christianity has its many moral similarities surrounding the theme of fate found in Oedipus the King Just like the play this branch of religion also believes in the idea that fate is something that a person has absolutely no control over also referred to as determinism Taylor Free will is limited basically a person can choose whichever route they want to take in life but the outcome will always be the sameFree will is every persons right but would it make a difference if your destiny has already been decided for you Pelican 1160-72The two most iconic characters in this play are Oedipus who the play is named after and his father King Laius Both father and son believe in their prophecies but made the tragic mistake of thinking that they can steer the hands of fate in a favorable direction If
