In The Cathedral Raymond Carver writes about a man the narratorwhose wife meets up with an old friend whose wife has recently passedLater on the old friend is referred to as a blind man named Robert Theauthor of this short story is inferring that blindness can arise frommore than just physical loss of sight He is explaining how we can beblind by viewing the world negatively Most individuals are blessed withsight However a lot of people will never be able to see the worldthrough the eyes of the blind A simple biology class will teach you that your other senses areamplified if you happen to lose one Nevertheless this story provides amore profound meaning showing that even the most ungrateful person thenarrator can realize the power of sight Amazingly Carver shows thatassuming after reading this story that the narrator can see and Robertis the one without sight is wrong However it is clear that thenarrator is blinded by his ignorance This is shown after first meetingRobert the narrator said This blind man feature this he was wearing a beard A beard on ablind man Too much I say Carver 12 Following that the narratorsaid he thought dark glasses were a must for the blind and I wish hehad some because at first glance his eyes looked creepy The narratorcontinues to show no empathy and be prejudice toward Robert when hestated the blind move slow and never show emotion Carver 8 Thenarrator shows complete disrespect later on when he decides to turn onthe TV while Robert and the narrators wife are talking Carver 15 Furthermore Robert seems to have a stronger relationship with thenarrators wife than the narrator has The narrator is blinded to thelack of communication in their marriage My wife finally took her eyesoff the blind man and looked at me I had a feeling she didnt like whatshe saw I shrugged Carver 13 The previous quote from
