The Snowflake Necklace In Guy de Maupassants story The Necklace the main character Madame Mathilde Loisel wants to have more than what she can afford She borrows her friend Madame Forestiers necklace to go to a ball and later loses it So Madame Loisel works herself haggard to buy a similar necklace to replace the original However life is full of irony and at the end of the story she realizes that the necklace she borrowed was fake Because of her greed and dishonesty she spends ten years of her life trying to pay for the necklace she lost Even though Madame Loisel has a humble and understanding husband she is not happy because she wants more than what she can afford Her husband is a little clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction Therefore he cannot give her a life of luxury but he loves her so much that he always tries to please her For example one night he comes home with an invitation to a ball thinking it will make her glad Madame Loisel instead of being delighted is upset because she does not have an appropriate dress to wear To make her happy her husband decides to buy her a new dress To pay for it he gives her the money he was going to use to buy a gun and go on a hunting trip with his friends But Madame Loisel still is not happy because she does not have any jewel to wear and is afraid of looking like distress Her husband suggests that she can borrow some jewels from her friend Madame Forestier Madame Loisel agrees with him and goes to her friends house She chooses a diamond necklace which she later loses at the ball Instead of telling the truth to her friend about losing her necklace she dices to tell her that the necklace is being repaired To get the money to replace her
