Throughout the history of mankind reputations have been deciding factors that either make or break a person In Arthur Millers The Crucible a persons name or reputation was a huge factor of not only how the person themselves were viewed but also how the future generations of their family were viewed Three people in The Crucible were heavily affected by trying to maintain good reputations Reverend Samuel Parris Abigail Williams and John Proctor Reverend Parris was very conscientious of what others thought of him Abigail hid behind lies to protect her reputation and John Proctor died instead of disgracing his family name Due to the plot line of this play it could be considered a tragedy and the source of the tragedy was that each character in the play was too concerned about how clean their reputation was especially Parris Abigail and ProctorReverend Parris is a man who feels he has no respect from the townsfolk of Salem because he thinks they undermine his ministry and therefore himself as the minister Parris only wants to be respected as minister and live a peaceful life So when Abigail and many other girls in the town are found dancing in the woods Parris becomes even more distressed that his reputation will be stained because he is quite sure that Abigail his niece led the girls in dancing in the woods and his daughter Betty was one of the first to show signs of a peculiar ailment Parris recognizes the possibility that witchcraft is being practiced in the town and that people will think is had started in his own house He worries about the possible danger that it will bring to his reputation if the townsfolk learn that his daughter and niece could be consorting with the devil Parris charges Abigail with compromising his very character by dancing in the woods when he has finally earned some respect in the town Parris Abigail I have fought here
