The decision that named Chicago host of the 1893 Worlds Fair came just two decades after the city had been nearly wiped out by the infamous Great Fire In the twenty years between tragedy and triumph Chicago had managed to pull itself out of the rubble to emerge as one of Americas premiere urban centers Supported by a booming economy focused upon industrial aspects the city saw its population explode in this rebuilding phase as countless immigrants and other working class members flooded its borders in search of employment The progress the city had made was more than obvious and was instrumental in Chicago gaining the role as host to the entire world In addition to this remarkable transformation were several wealthy influential upper-class members of Chicago society who used their clout to land the destinction And it was this group then who were thus put in charge of the planning and construction of the 1893 Worlds Fair Billed the Columbian Exposition to honor the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus island landfall in the Caribbean this select group took it upon themselves to create an island of their own upon which a new world of sorts would be based That these people initially attempted to create a utopia upon which the world of the twentieth century should be based is no mystery The real question lies in the consequences of their actions what exactly was the effect of the 1893 Worlds Fair upon society In answering this difficult question one can view personal accounts to see exactly how individuals of this era interpreted their surroundings One such example of this is the work of Marian Shaw Her correspondence for a small mid-western newspaper served as a window to the fair through which those unable to attend could look However in using the writing as historical evidence it becomes possible to not only gain insight into Shaws personal social views but also to understand what
