Although the city of Tampa is less than 200 years old it has an extremely rich history Over the years Tampa has been transformed from what was once a small fort located in the wilderness to a budding city forever changed by the Florida-land-boom to what is now a large and prosperous metropolitanLike many cities throughout the world much of Tampas early history has been documented However unlike many other cities much of this documentation has survived in the form of thousands of historic photographs over 14000 of which have been preserved by the Hillsborough County Public LibraryFor over a year I have been sorting through these historic photographs which depict scenes of Tampas once thriving downtown its grand hotels and its many majestic movie theatres I am particularly interested in the historic photographs of Tampa that show buildings which still exist My proposal is to revisit these existing buildings shown in these sometimes 100 year old photographs and re-photograph them from the same angle and same vantage point as the original photographers did 100 years ago By having these two nearly identical photographs with the one main difference being the elapse of around 100 years I hope to illustrate how much Tampa its downtown its architecture its streets and its people have evolved over the years and how much it has stayed the same I want my project to inspire the citizens and visitors of Tampa to take note of our citys history and to realize that many of these buildings from Tampas glamorous past still exist Having modern and historic photographs of these existing buildings specifically photographs taken from the same angle and vantage point as the originals will help people rediscover and better appreciate our citys history and heritage
