1Brief Description Sam Walton has established his company in the United States very successfully since its incorporation in 1969 The key aspects of success in his company have been derived from organizational culture technology company growth merchandising styles store operations pricing distribution vendor relations new store types and insight about an international market Competition in this market of discount stores is tough Wal-Marts ideas believes and strategic planning has set them ahead of the rest 2Lessons Learned There are many lessons learned from this case The first lesson that I believe was crucial to success was the technological factor in operations This company was a leader in technological advances for its industry They installed UPC codes for all products set up a satellite system for all stores and main offices and linked these systems to suppliers By allowing all sales to be linked directly to suppliers the suppliers could see what was needed in the different stores in that region Just In Time was in effect for a large retail establishment and this created huge cost savings The second lesson learned would be the organizational culture The CEO believed the companys employees would make the difference By allowing for great benefits calling the employees Associates providing Open Door and Open Books policies and generally Taking Care Of the employees the culture of Wal-Mart became more like a family than a work place This technique is extremely useful in the retail industry when employees are dealing with customer daily If you treat your employees well they in-turn treat your customers well The third thing that was done well was distribution The technology enhanced JIT system allowed for a very effective distribution system to pan out By using Cross-Docking techniques of transferring products from the in-bound truck to the store-bound truck the warehouse inventory was greatly reduced The fourth lesson would be vendor relations Vendor relations are important for many strategic reasons Often strategic partnership
