The Middle East has long been home to a very deep-rooted conflict The struggle for the control of Jerusalem between the Jews Christians and Muslims has been going on for hundreds of years After WWII with the establishment of Israel the conflict grew even stronger Now as Israel is currently the dominant and the stronger of the countries in the region the predominantly Muslim countries are finding it hard to accept the fact that Israel is in fact the dominant force in the Middle East Israel in turn is trying very hard to learn to get along with its Muslim neighbors One of the ways it has been attempting to reach this goal is the signing of different so called peace agreements with the PLOIt has even with the various peace agreements been very tumultuous Israel is unwilling to give up complete control of the Gaza Strip the West Bank and East Jerusalem to the Palestinians Along with this Israel has been strengthening its settlements in these areas and has been encouraging even more expansion Right now it seems as if the peace process has stopped being effective and has instead turned detrimental to the stability of the Middle East The peace process between Israel and the PLO was initiated mediated and overlooked by the United States The United States wanted and still does a quick fix which is consistent with the Clinton Administrations foreign policy so far This quick fix mentality did not allow for exposure to views and ideas that would have encouraged a more profound understanding of the flaws says Clovis Maksoud in Taking Sides United States involvement has been essential for bringing together the two parties but current US involvement has been looked badly upon by the Palestinians and their Arab allies The ArabMuslim world has extremely strong beliefs that the United States took measures both to assure Israels superior strategic edge in security make it economically strong and to
