The Continuous Theme of Familial Dysfunction in Literature Families are never perfect and it shows in literature especially in Morrissons Song of Solomon and Tans The Kitchen Gods Wife Within each of these novels there is an ever-present theme of familial dysfunction that is the fulcrum of all conflicts The illusion of a regular run of the mill exterior is the only disguise allowed to these families the secrets they hold are more for their own protection than the protection of others feeling These ideas of self preservation lead to the ultimate idea of self realization Many sources quote that Morrrissons ultimate goal is for Milkman to discover himself through separation from the secrets and dysfunction that his family hold for him In an article by PinkMonkeycom the author states that Morrisson shows that the agonized young man of her tale is also in need of some lessons in caring about others than himself The dysfunctional family is more of a tool of self improvement rather than an actual hindrance to the individual Many articles discuss the affect that Macon Dead Milkmans father and Ruth his mother has on Milkman One such article that mentions this is written by Gary Storhoff Anaconda Love Parental Enmeshment in Morrissons Song of Solomon says that the kind of love given to Milkman is Anaconda Love This kind of love squeezes out the life of Milkman Because of this anaconda love Milkman must escape his life and therefore Morrisson can examine Milkmans life from a distance Because of hardship and embarrassment of the family problems it causes a tear between the individual and the family system Because of this split there is an urge to better oneself to be set apart from ones own dysfunctional family Because this strange affect the dysfunction of a family can be a tool towards self realization Milkmans strange family system definitely contributes to his journey to the south
