Ones initial thought of a hero may resemble someone who flies or uses their super powers to save the world from turmoil But in reality a hero embodies bravery assertiveness and ethics In the play The Crucible John Proctor serves as a prime example of a hero A series of deplorable witchcraft trials occur leading John to confess his sins and in return save the lives of many innocent victims Although Johns hamartia results in the main reason for his death his sacrifices make him the tragic hero the playIn the beginning of the play John Proctor is known as an honorable man in the town of Salem Massachusetts The narrator describes him as a powerful of body even-tempered and not easily led Miller 20 He leads an honest Puritan life that produces recognition from himself and his community But he exhibits a strong dislike for hypocrites that in his presence a fool felt his foolishness instantly Miller 20 He speaks his mind and takes pride in his name It can be inferred that excess hubris is his tragic flaw which later results in his death After the narrator introduces John the readers learn that he committed multiple sins Presumptuously John has committed adultery and lechery with the young antagonist of the play Abigail They both keep the secret of their sins until Abigail realizes that she wants him only for herself She says to him I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near Miller 22 Abigails fatal attraction towards John motivates her to devise a plan to eradicate his current wife Elizabeth from his life She decides to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft an insidious and evil superstition in the Puritan society When the unsuspecting people believe Abigail of her accusations Elizabeth is sentenced to defend herself in court Instantly John realizes that Abigail wants to seek revenge on him because he ended their
