The depiction of Ulysses in the poem of the same name by Tennyson mirrors Odysseus from Homers Odyssey in that they both exemplify perseverance and courage The determination to not give up regardless of the misfortunes bestowed upon them Odysseus is a figure mainly heroic in his ability to continue in the pursuit of knowledge We are not now the strength in the old days Moved earth and heaven that which we are we are One equal temper of heroic hearts Made weak by time and fate but strong in will To strive to seek to find and not to yield Ulysses 66-70 Though Odysseus is considered the more crafty of the two they were both so careful and cunning and witty that it made them an even more formidable enemy to have Each was capable of clothing his passionate intentions under the guise of virtue or honor The craftiness of Odysseus lies in his ability to hide his intentions and feelings by circumventing the issue It is not that he often lies to his audience exactly but instead says whatever he needs to say to make necessary preparations For example in trying to leave Calypsos island with out offending her he nearly insults his wife He says to Calypso My quiet Penelope-how well I know- Would seem a shade before your majesty Death and old age being unknown to you While she must dieYet it is true each day I long for home long for the
