This essay is a discussion of the statement - The media offers images of children which contribute to aduls unease and perceptions that childhood is in crisis In order to assess this statement one would need to look at the magazines and comics available The images portrayed and the stereotypes presented of children In the 1900s childrens comics and magazines contained Nationalist and imperialist views In todays society some comics and magazines contain images of violence and fashion at a young influential age Today comics have come along way from the days of the Beano and Dandy Beano and Dandy have been running before the Second World War The Dandys main character is Deseparate Dan and the Beanos is Dennis the Menace The Beano has not changed much it contains the same characters A recent survey in England Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland showed Beano as still popular The comics sometimes contained what many saw as violence and aggression They also contained guns as well some of the comic characters would be shown holding guns this showed dominant characteristics This stopped when society began to be more aware and started to worry about their children being so easily influenced by violence What was seen as expectable and normal behaviour at the time was now being seen as wrong the society shown did not exist Therefore comics had to change their contents to fit in with an ever-changing society The majority of characters in the comics were white the few non-whites were usually shown in a negative light ie a baddie The Barbie magazine which is widely sold contains stereotypes of petite young girls dressed in perfect dresses and immaculate outfits Young girls who the magazines are aimed at are being sold the image of Barbie the blue eyed blonde petite waif like girl with the perfect lifestyle Many young girls think that this is what one should aspire to be The
