As human beings we are face with conflict in our lives Face-Negotiation Theory looks at intercultural communication dealing with conflict and negotiation along with the concept of individualism versus collectivism This theory was developed by Stella Ting-Toomey according to her face-negotiation theory provides a basis for predicting how people will accomplish facework in different cultures When looking at the term facework we can break it down For example the word face related to this theory is ones self-image in the presence of others Facework as a whole is the communication behaviors people use to build and protect their own face and to protect build or threaten the face of another person For instance when any person is teased or attacked verbally that person will automatically feel the need to save face but depending on your cultural background that person my act differently to this conflict This topic is an important area of study because one can learn about how and why people react differently around the world to conflictThe research Title by Authors in 2000 was about A study was done in 2000 by John G Oetzel Stella and Ting-Toomey on typology of facework behaviors in conflicts with best friends and relative strangers This study involved 237 participants and asks them to respond to open-ended questions about the approach they take when negotiating face during a conflict with either a best friend or a relative stranger To get a better understanding on the way different cultures react to conflict they diversified their participants by including 16 Japanese members 16 members of ethnic minority groups in the US and 20 European Americans When analyzing conflict Ting-Toomey mentions conflict as the perceived andor actual incompatibility of values expectations processes or outcomes between two or more parties over substantive andor relational issues 1994 p360This study points out that there are a lack of investigations about face-negotiation behaviors utilized during conflict most prior research on communication during conflict
