Failure of Politicians Focusing on Ideas 1 Some Northerners who were not opposed to slavery in the South wanted to keep it out of northern states and territories for many reasons Northerners were not opposed to slavery in the South because they needed slavery to make money The Northerners new it was wrong and that is why they did not want slavery to take place in the North and in the new territories 2 The influence of the slavery issue on presidential elections form 1848 to 1860 was great To start off the choice of candidates was effected If the party wanted someone for slavery someone from the North wouldnt even have a chance In 1848 the Democrats called for Free Soil Free Speech Free Labor and Free Men This just shows that the slavery issue was brought up In 1852 slavery issue didnt effect the election because of the Compromise of 1850 In the electron of 1856 the Republicans chose Fremont and there slogan was Fee Speech Free press Free soil Free men Fremont The slavery issue as you can see effected slogans 3 Each of the following further enflamed slavery Mexican Cession The Mexican Cession is land including California Nevada Utah Arizona and parts of Colorado and New Mexico had great effect on the slavery issue It was hard just to decide how to divide up the land that they already had to solve the slavery issue Now you are adding on a lot of land are they going to divide the land Is the land going to be all free This land deffently enflames the slavery issue Wilmot Proviso Wilmot was a Democrat form Pennsylvania and he offered an amendment to Polks bill Wilmont proposed that neither slavery no involuntary servitude shall ever exist in any part of the territory acquired from Mexico This amendment passed the House several times but the Senate always voted it down This got the North
