After reading the book Turkey Sterns and the Detroit Stars I realized that the book didnt just talk about the Negro League of Baseball but yet a wide range of subjects The author of the book Richard Bak touched on subjects such as segregation the history of blackball Black baseball heros as well as racism that occurred With a wide range of subjects that were thouched upon by the author it was hard to figure out just what his thesis was within this book if he even had one I do however believe that if he were to have a thesis or a main subject it would be the fact that blackball players were no less skilled than the whiteball players that were in the majors but their chance to make it there would not be a easy one He continues to show that the only thing that kept Blacks from proving themselves in the majors was skin color Had it not been for the color of their skin famous blackball players like Gosh Gibson Satchel Paige Turkey Sternes James Cool Poppa Bell and perhaps one of the greatest blackball players Andrew Rube Foster would have dominated the majors If only given the chance In the book there were many things that stuck out to me which helped support the fact that author Bak believed that many of the early blackball players were good enough to play in the majors His statistics played a major role in supporting that thought He givesstatistics of Turkey Stearns of the Detroit Stars in the 1925 playoffs batting an average of 348 and Ed Wesley who during his time with the Stars batted an average of 424 Richard Bak stated that Throughout the US Canada Mexico and the Carribean Some researches estimate that he Satchel Paige 2500 games He won 2000 of them including about 100 no-hitters These are just a few of the statistics that were
