Steel is one of the most commonly used products today One of its biggest uses is in the construction industry This is referred to structural steel Structural steel can be further classified by the way it was produced and its components Two main kinds of steel are A36 Structural steel and A992 Structural steel The letter and number combination in front refer certain descriptions of how the steel is produced according to ASTM American Society for Testing Materials In this paper I am going to go over what is in these two steels among others I will also give you some information about the allowing elements that go into steel and what properties they give the steel Steel is produced from mostly iron Iron is mined and then put into a blast furnace along with limestone and coke coke is a dried and heated form of coal Air is pumped through the blast furnace creating extremely high temperature melting the iron Most of the iron sinks to the bottom and tapped whereas the impurities float on top of the iron These impurities are called slag and they are also tapped The tapped iron has too many impurities at this stage and is pretty much unusable This is called pig iron The pig iron is then sent to a converter which will burn off the high carbon content and the rest of the impurities The biggest difference between the different kinds of steel and iron is the carbon content That is why the converters because how much carbon they burn out of the iron or steel will determine its properties and the final product Low Carbon Steel contains 05-32 percent carbon This steel is the structural steel Medium Carbon Steel contains from 35-55 carbon and is used for machinery High Carbon Steel contains between 6-15 and is used for machining tools High Carbon steel is used more for items like hammers chisels or anything that needs
